Mixing for Film and TV

Your music should be heard! This introduction to film mixing is aimed at the beginner who has been developing their skills mixing their own music, but now wants to upgrade their knowledge for a film and television workflow. Best practices for mixing and delivering music for film are explored, including film specific templates, organizing stems, using bus compression and advanced limiter techniques to create industry standard mixes that can compete with dialogue and effects, and exploit multichannel sound. At the beginner level, particular emphasis is placed on the basics of compression, eq and reverb in a cinema context. Mixing successfully with headphones and starter systems is addressed as well. If you are new to music mixing in general and want to up your game, then this beginner class is for you!
Tom has thousands of plug ins online and can recommend the cheapest and the best for your needs. Logic Pro will be used for demonstrations, but the content applies to all DAW’s and hardware setups, large and small

Instructor Bio

Multi award winning composer Tom Third has scored over 250 hours of film and television, specializing in dramatic series and documentary work. Recent projects include the TV series Coroner for CBC, and BLK An Origin Story for History Channel. Tom’s background as an electronic music artist informs his progressive hybrid scores that make use of novel synthetic textures and traditional instruments alike. Tom also teaches film composition, audio production and film music history at the The Canadian Film Centre, The Ontario College of Art and Design, and Toronto Metropolitan University.
