Demystifying the World of Trailer Music: Crafting the Cue
The art of crafting music for the trailer world has evolved over the past couple decades, shifting to the forefront of the music industry as a specialized and highly competitive space. The concept of storytelling through the relationship between sonic and visual – score and screen – is concentrated within the outlines of the trailer and promo mediums. Further, one must learn how to anticipate the future; writing music which ultimately will not only exist for a particular project of the moment, but will exist in yet-to-be-determined projects as well. The intersection of art and functionality is the balancing act of creating within the universe of trailers. How can one maintain creative identity while servicing the demand of the current industry landscape? We will explore the wonderful wide world of trailer music, focusing on specific tips, techniques and tools of the trade. Tailored for media composers, producers and songwriters (artists in their own right) this course will serve as an introduction into the world of trailer music, and unlock the key components which make a cue and/or song trailer-worthy.
*It is highly recommended that students are users of Logic Pro X for the most beneficial experience.
At the end of the day, this course will provide you with the foundational building blocks to effectively create and package music curated for trailers – demystifying the process from creative to business.
Course highlights: sample libraries – yay or nay? Exploring industry standard libraries and most effective uses in conjunction with live elements. Formula versus freedom – finding “the sweet spot” when it comes to crafting a trailer music cue. Anticipation of the edit – learning how to craft contour which best serves the needs of the trailer house and editor. Analyzing the trailerization genre – what are music stylization best practices and how do we create them? Understanding “the brief” – we will explore what a music trailer brief is (using real brief examples), and the ways of translating the brief into music. Creative versus business – an overview of the process for getting your music used within the trailer space.
The trailer space is exciting, compelling, rapid-fire and very necessary to the entertainment industry – a real roller-coaster of experiences. But the only ups and downs we experience as creators should be musically, not emotionally! Time to demystify.
Let’s crack the code of trailer music together!
