Course Description

A look into the art of musical storytelling through the use of thematic and motivic composition. How these tools can be used not only for powerful emotional and narrative effect, but how they are also helpful when required to write music on a tight deadline without compromising artistry or production.

Composer Bio

Spencer Creaghan is a Canadian Screen Award nominated, multi-SOCAN award winning Composer and alumnus of the Canadian Film Centre’s Slaight Family Music Residency.

He has scored over 150 combined film, tv, and video game projects, with recent credits including the SYFY series, SURREALESTATE, AMC Shudder’s SLASHER: RIPPER, Netflix’s MY LITTLE PONY: MAKE YOUR MARK, QUICKENING with debuted TIFF 2021, and I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE which premiered at TIFF 2023. His soundtracks have been released through Milan Records.

Outside the world of film, Creaghan has created orchestral arrangements for Symphonic Metal acts worldwide, including the JUNO nominated album MARTYR from ex-Cradle of Filth’s LINDSAY SCHOOLCRAAFT and San Diego deathcore pioneers CARNIFEX’s new album NECROMANTEUM, among others.

His unique musical style merges classical orchestration, contemporary instruments, ancient folk traditions, vocal textures, and on-site field recordings to craft a bold personification of the film’s subtextual essence; achieving what he calls: Music As Character.
