Eri Kikuchi
I'm Eri Kikuchi, born in Japan and raised on the West Coast of British Columbia, compose and perform to embrace diversity of sound. I first debuted as a professional during a five-day sold-out live theatre showcase of buto buto (bones are seeds), held in Vancouver, in July 2022. My classical music training helped me to wear multiple hats, from sound design, composition, improvisation, leading a choir and ensemble, to music production and studio recording. “Apo / Grandchild”, one of the songs that people said brought tears to their eyes, was inspired by the intergenerational friendships formed within the cast and crew, was broadcasted on the Philippines national news channel, ABS-CBN, as well as local media coverage on CBC radio, INQUIRER.NET, BC Arts Alliance, The Georgia Straight, and Canadian Filipino.net. With strong support of the theatre’s tri-organizational production team, Anyone Can Act Theatre, the National Pilipino Canadian Cultural Centre, and the South East Asian Cultural Heritage Society, I felt this was exactly how I wanted to spend my energy and skills - for story production. For this theatre community, I performed traditional Filipino music with a band, composed new music rooted in Filipino heritage, while upholding my classical Euro-centric piano training.
