Janal Bechthold

Janal Bechthold is a Canadian Screen Music Award (CASMA)-winning composer for film, TV, games, and interactive media, known for weaving playful and dark moods with intelligence and emotional maturity. Her formal training as a music therapist gives her a heightened sense of awareness of how music conveys emotion and she skillfully seeks to immerse the audience in each story by incorporating thematic elements such as sounds from the story’s environment into the score.

Janal has been nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards for her work in both film and television. MARLENE (Wendy Hill-Tout, starring Kristen Booth and Greg Bryk) earned her a nomination for Achievement in Music: Original Score, and both COMPANY TOWN (CBC) and COTTAGERS AND INDIANS (CBC) received nominations for Best Original Score, Non-Fiction. In 2022 she received the Canadian Screen Music Award: Best Original Score for Interactive Media and a Hollywood Music In Media Award nomination for NO REASON TO APOLOGIZE: The Resilient Legacy of Viola Desmond (TEACH Media) alongside co-composer La-Nai Gabriel.

Janal is former Vice President of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, served on the Board of the SOCAN Foundation, and spearheaded the research report "Gender in the Canadian Screen Composing Industry”. She is currently scoring the animated series, "Millie Magnificent" (Nelvana/Treehouse)
